German energy storage specialist VoltStorage GmbH has obtained licences to install three battery energy storage facilities in Greece, enabling it to inject 156 MW of capacity into the grid.
The licences were awarded on Wednesday by Greece’s Regulatory Authority for Energy (RAE).
Specifically, VoltStorage has been authorised to build a system of up to 55.5 MW and an injection power of 49 MW in Dokos, located in the Rhodope regional unit of the East Macedonia and Thrace region. In Kazani, Western Macedonia region, it will install a 111-MW battery facility to inject up to 92.7 MW into the grid. The project is called Asvestopetra II.
The smallest of the three permitted projects is Ag Anna I, which envisages the installation of battery units totalling 11.1 MW that will have a maximum injection power of 9.7 MW. The facility will be situated in Viotia, Central Greece.
Created in 2016, VoltStorage develops and produces stationary flow batteries based on vanadium redox flow technology for commercial and agricultural businesses. The Munich-based business considers the technology an alternative to lithium-ion batteries.
