DEME wins installation job on French offshore wind farm

Belgian marine contractor DEME said today it has been awarded contracts to transport and install the foundations and the offshore substation for the 496-MW offshore wind project in France near the Yeu and Noirmoutier islands.

The project is being developed by Eoliennes en Mer des Iles d’Yeu et de Noirmoutier (EMYN), a consortium of Ocean Winds, which is a joint venture between Engie and EDPR, Sumitomo Corp, La Banque des Territoires and Vendee Energie.

The value of the contracts was not disclosed but it is above a total of EUR 300 million (USD 323m).

DEME said that this is its second assignment in France’s offshore wind sector after the Saint-Nazaire project and added that both present challenging conditions as they are located in a very rocky area.

The substation pre-piling works will be carried out in the second half of 2023, while the installation of the monopile foundations, substation jacket and topside is due to start in the first half of 2024.

The wind farm will start electricity generation in 2025.

France recently celebrated commercial operation of its first utility-scale offshore wind farm, the 480-MW Saint-Nazaire and also launched tenders for two offshore bottom-fixed wind projects with a total capacity of 2.5 GW.
