General Motors (NYSE:GM) has formed a new business unit called GM Energy to offer a range of energy management products and services including, among others, bi-directional charging, vehicle-to-home (V2H) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) applications, stationary storage, solar products, software applications and hydrogen fuel cells.
The new division will encompass the newly launched Ultium Home and Ultium Commercial together with the existing Ultium Charge 360 service.
GM will partner with SunPower Corp (NASDAQ:SPWR) to develop and offer a home energy system which will be made up of integrated electric vehicle (EV) and battery solutions, solar panels and home energy storage. It will be available along with the retail launch of the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV, according to the announcement.
SunPower is one of several large-scale companies in the US that have agreed to work with GM Energy to provide energy solutions or receive offerings, the carmaker said.
"GM Energy has the opportunity to help deliver sustainable energy products and services that can help mitigate the effect of power outages and provide customers with resilient and cost-effective energy management," said Travis Hester, vice president of GM EV Growth Operations.
"GM Energy's mission is to offer customers access to a full suite of energy products and services, including solutions beyond the vehicle, accelerating the seamless transition to an all-electric future," Hester also commented.
