Finnish technology group Wartsila Corp (HEL:WRT1V) has completed the installation of a 125-MW/250-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in California on behalf of LS Power’s subsidiary REV Renewables.
The BESS will support grid stability, ensure resource adequacy and provide ancillary services to the state power grid, Wartsila said on Tuesday. The Finnish firm, which is acting as engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor and technology provider, added that “substantial completion” on the project has been achieved.
Dubbed LeConte, the energy storage facility is located in the city of Calexico, Imperial County, near the border with Mexico. It is equipped with Warsila’s GridSolv Quantum modular energy storage units. As it is sited at a major junction point for energy producers in the CAISO and San Diego Gas & Electric service areas, the installation will be used to maintain system frequency and will perform peak day operations to relieve congestion on transmission lines.
The BESS project was cleared by the California Public Utilities Commission in early 2022 under a wider plan envisaging the deployment of 15 GW of new energy storage and demand response resources by 2032.
