Brisbane Airport to go all-renewable under Stanwell deal

Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) has clinched a deal with Queensland government-owned energy generator Stanwell Corp that will enable the operator of Australia’s third-largest airport to switch to 100% renewable energy.

Under the arrangement, BAC will be supplied with up to 185 GWh of renewable electricity annually to power its operations, namely runway lights, terminals, travellators, escalators, retail shops, administration, IT and electric vehicles, the Queensland government said on Sunday.

Power deliveries will be carried out through Stanwell’s retail arm Stanwell Energy. The contracted power volumes will be sourced from Squadron Energy’s 450-MW Clarke Creek wind farm, for which Stanwell has in place a 346.5-MW power purchase agreement (PPA), and the 200-MW Blue Grass Solar Farm being built by Spain’s X-Elio. Both projects are located in Queensland.

BAC is Australia’s first airport operator to announce it will rely on 100% renewable power supply by 2025. According to its CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff, the contract with Stanwell will enable the company to meet its net-zero goal by 2025, which will be 25 years earlier than planned.
