EnBW signs 85-MW PPA with Fraport for North Sea wind farm

Fraport AG (ETR:FRA), the operator of the Frankfurt airport, has agreed to source 85 MW of green electricity from the 900-MW He Dreiht wind project in the North Sea, currently under development.

A power purchase agreement (PPA) has been signed with German electric utility EnBW Energie Baden-Wuerttemberg AG (ETR:EBK), Fraport said on Friday. The green electricity will power three terminals and other buildings at Frankfurt airport from the second half of 2026 for a period of 15 years. The clean energy will also be used to illuminate the airport's apron and four runways as well as to charge the fleet of over 500 electric vehicles that are used in the airfield.

The PPA with EnBW will help the airport operator cut carbon emissions by up to 80,000 tonnes per year and support its strategy to reach climate neutrality for the Frankfurt airport by 2045.

Located in German waters some 90 km (55.92 mi) northwest of the island of Borkum, the He Dreiht wind farm will feature about 60 turbines each of 15 MW that will start producing electricity in 2025. The investment decision is expected in 2023.

EnBW secured the project in Germany's first offshore wind auction in 2017 and will operate the farm without state subsidies. The utility will market the electricity under PPAs and efforts to sign more such deals will be stepped up next year.
