Vattenfall wins cable installation permit for 640-MW Kriegers Flak

The Swedish government has awarded Vattenfall AB permission to lay out underwater cables for its 640-MW Kriegers Flak offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea, the power generator announced on Friday.

The green light for cable installation comes after Vattenfall secured a construction permit from the Swedish government in May last year. With the cables approval, it has all required permits in place, president and CEO Anna Borg said in a LinkedIn post.

The Swedish firm will now work to ensure the project can reach profitability, with an investment decision expected to be taken in 2025.

Kriegers Flak calls for the installation of 40 to 50 wind turbines in an area between Denmark, Germany and Sweden, some 30 kilometres (18.6 miles) south of the Swedish coast, designated a Natura 2000 zone. Power generation from the complex is planned to be launched in 2028.

The Swedish government's permission for the cables comes with several conditions related to protecting the marine environment and archaeological remains on the seabed.
