Dutch telecoms inks PPA for power from HKW VI offshore wind farm

Dutch telecommunications company KPN will procure over 200 GWh of power annually from the 760-MW offshore wind park at Hollandse Kust West (HKW) VI in Dutch waters under a deal with local utility Eneco Groep NV.

The 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) will run from 2027 and will help the telecoms group to supply more than 50% of its electricity consumption with green power, Eneco said on Friday.

The contract calls for Eneco to supply electricity “as nominated,” meaning that KPN will actually purchase power from the wind farm when the wind blows. Otherwise, other solutions can be used, such as storage or solar energy.

HKW VI will be installed within lot VI of the HKW zone, around 50 km (31.1 miles) off the Dutch coast near IJmuiden. Ecowende, the joint venture between Eneco and oil and gas major Shell Plc (AMS:SHELL), last week won a government tender that gives it the right to build the wind farm at the particular site.

KPN became climate neutral since 2015 while its fixed and mobile networks have been running on green electricity since 2011. The company aims to reduce emissions throughout the value chain to net zero by 2040.
