Amazon adds 2.7 GW of renewable energy projects to global portfolio

Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) is continuing with its renewable energy purchases, announcing today 71 new projects representing 2.7 GW of capacity.

The US tech group, which is the world’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy, now has a 18.5-GW portfolio consisting of 379 renewable energy projects in 21 countries.

The latest projects include the company’s first solar farms in India -- three projects in Rajasthan, with a combined capacity of 420 MW, and its first renewable energy project in South America -- a 122-MW solar farm in Brazil. Amazon is also adding its first rooftop solar projects in France and Austria, and its first solar farm in Poland, which it says is one of the largest corporate solar deals so far in the country. The new projects further include 1 GW of clean energy capacity across the southeastern US, including the group’s first two projects in Louisiana.

“We are bringing new wind and solar projects online to power our offices, fulfillment centers, data centers, and stores, which collectively serve millions of customers globally, and we are on a path to reach 100% renewable energy across our entire business by 2025,” commented Amazon Web Services chief executive Adam Selipsky.

Walburga Hemetsberger, chief executive of SolarPower Europe, founding partner of the RE-Source Platform, said: “As Europe faces skyrocketing energy prices, solar and renewable energy deals will strengthen Amazon’s strategic resilience -- we hope to see more companies follow Amazon’s lead.”
