CorPower taps Diab material for 1st commercial-scale wave energy converter

Swedish wave energy converter (WEC) developer CorPower Ocean AB is working with fellow Swedish subsea composite materials provider Diab on the construction of its first commercial-scale device, the firms said on Monday.

CorPower is currently conducting build-out operations in Sweden and Portugal for its next generation C4 WEC. The first commercial scale hull is approaching completion at its Portuguese base in Viana do Castelo, which is also showcasing the company’s “mobile factory” concept for quick roll-out of WEC hulls.

The core material for the hull’s sandwich structure is Diab’s Divinycell H grade material, which offers strength, durability and impact resistance along with light weight and buoyancy performance properties, according to the announcement.

The WEC is part of CorPower’s flagship HiWave-5 project off the coast of Agucadoura, northern Portugal, which will later become a four-system installation.
