Microsoft clinches PPAs for 900 MW of renewables for Irish data centres

Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ:MSFT) will procure electricity from more than 900 MW of new renewable energy projects in Ireland to power its data centres in the island country.

The software giant announced the power purchase agreements (PPAs) on Wednesday without providing the names of the specific projects. The deals were signed to support the company’s plan to cover the electricity demand of its Irish data centres solely with renewable energy by 2025.

Norway-based renewables company Statkraft A/S has clinched a 366-MW deal to deliver electricity to Microsoft, Bloomberg reports. The power will allegedly come from six solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind parks that the Norwegian group will build in Ireland.

Meanwhile, the Irish Times reported about additional PPAs with Energia Group and Power Capital Renewable Energy.

According to the latest ranking of research firm BloombergNEF (BNEF), Microsoft was the second biggest corporate power off-taker in 2021 with PPAs for 8.9 GW of capacity. The technology group has set a goal of supplying 100% of the power demand of its data centres, buildings and campuses from renewable energy by 2025 and becoming carbon-negative by 2030. Its ultimate goal is to remove from the environment all the carbon it has emitted, either directly or by electrical consumption, since it was founded in 1975.
