Iberdrola wraps up work on 50-MW Askio III wind project in Greece

Spanish utility Iberdrola SA (BME:IBE) said on Monday that it has started to commission its 50-MW Askio III wind farm in the region of Western Macedonia, Greece, reaching the milestone in just over six months after launching construction.

The wind farm is located in the mountains at an altitude of 1,500 metres (4,921 ft) above sea level, which required Iberdrola to move fast with the project and hook it to the grid before snow starts piling up in the winter. A condensed construction process, involving simultaneous execution of civil works, transport and wind turbine assembly, helped the company wrap up works in a short amount of time, according to the press release.

Askio III is equipped with 12 wind turbines with 70-metre-long blades and a rotor diameter of 150 metres. To speed up the commissioning process, Iberdrola tested the machines with the help of generators before connecting them to the grid. The new installation will share the grid connection point with the 38-MW Askio II wind farm, which Iberdrola is currently building.

The utility said that it now has 365 MW of clean capacity installed in Greece.
