US DOE to award USD 47m for clean hydrogen R&D

The US Department of Energy (DOE) will provide up to USD 47 million (EUR 43.5m) in funding for projects that contribute to lowering the cost of producing clean hydrogen and enhance related infrastructure.

The financing will be made available through the DOE’s Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO). With the ultimate goal of speeding up research, development and demonstration of affordable clean hydrogen technologies, the initiative will seek to reduce production costs in line with the national goal to cut the cost of clean hydrogen to USD 1 per kg within 10 years. Additionally, it will aim to enhance hydrogen infrastructure and improve the performance of hydrogen fuel cells.

DOE will disburse the financing in the form of cooperative agreements, with awards to be granted for two to four years. Interested parties are invited to submit concept papers by February 24, while full applications will be due by April 28.

“This funding will advance cutting-edge research and drive down technology costs to help unlock the full potential of clean hydrogen energy [..],” said Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm.

The DOE explained that the lower cost of clean hydrogen and its use in various sectors will strengthen the US energy security and back the country’s goals for a 100% clean electric grid by 2035 and a net-zero emissions economy by 2050.
