Boskalis to install cables for Ørsted's offshore wind pair off Germany

Ørsted A/S (CPH:ORSTED) has tapped Dutch dredging and marine contractor Royal Boskalis Westminster NV (AMS:BOKA) to install inter-array cables for its Gode Wind 3 and Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind projects in the German North Sea.

The contract will include the transport, installation and burial of a combined total of 106 inter-array cables, Boskalis said Wednesday.

The final award of the contract will depend on Ørsted taking the final investment decision.

Several weeks ago, the Danish energy group announced that it had secured approval from German authorities to build the 900-MW Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind farm. In April this year, the 242-MW Gode Wind 3 project received the regulatory green light.

Ørsted plans to realise the projects simultaneously.

For its part in the projects, Boskalis intends to deploy its cable laying vessel Boka Ocean. The 136-metre Boka Ocean, which the company acquired earlier this year, will be equipped with a 4,000-tonne turntable.

Project preparations are expected to start shortly, while cable installation activities are scheduled for early 2024, Boskalis said.

The Gode Wind 3 wind farm is slated to go online in 2024, while Borkum Riffgrund 3 will start its operations in 2025.
