Vattenfall names German offshore wind project Nordlicht I

Swedish state-owned utility Vattenfall AB said today it has changed the name of its 980-MW wind project off the island of Borkum in the German North Sea to Nordlicht I.

Up until now, the project was referred to as “N-7.2”, which is the standardised identifier for the project area, as explained by Matthias Buko, the responsible project manager at Vattenfall. The new name reflects the location of the wind farm in the North Sea, he said further.

Nordlicht I is planned to be built in a surface area of 52.63 sq km about 96 km from shore and at water depths of between 37-39 metres. If it takes the final investment decision (FID), Vattenfall will realise the project by the end of 2027, without government subsidies. The company asserted its so-called "right of entry" for this project last autumn.

Presently, Vattenfall operates some 4.2 GW of onshore and offshore wind farms.
