Nexans lined up to supply export cables for 860-MW Moray West

French cable company Nexans SA (EPA:NEX) will supply the export cables for the 860-MW Moray West offshore wind farm in Scotland, subject to the project getting a contract for difference (CfD) in 2022 and reaching financial close.

The wind farm’s developer said on Thursday it has selected Nexans after an extensive procurement process. The Moray West project is owned by Ocean Winds, a 50/50 joint venture between EDP Renovaveis SA (ELI:EDPR) and Engie SA (EPA:ENGI), with Lithuanian renewables-focused utility Ignitis Group having a minor shareholding.

Nexans cables will connect the wind farm’s two offshore substation platforms to the onshore substation, which will be built at Whitehillock, near Keith in Moray. The cable manufacturer will also supply the cables for the underground connection from the project substation to the grid at Blackhillock, Keith. Nexans’ office in Edinburgh will support execution of the assignment.

“While Nexans have experience of utilising local contractors, the Moray West project team are working with Nexans to maximise the potential for the regional supply chain to secure sub-contracts, primarily supporting the onshore construction, including through Meet the Buyer events,” said Adam Morrison, project director for Moray West.

This is Nexans’ first offshore wind farm project with Ocean Winds.
