Hellenic Cables, a unit of Cenergy Holdings (EBR:CENER), has clinched a contract to supply inter-array cables for the 1.4-GW Sofia offshore wind project owned by RWE AG (ETR:RWE), thus expanding its activities in the Dogger Bank area in the British North Sea.
Under the agreement unveiled on Tuesday, the Greek cable maker has been mandated by Dutch family-owned marine contractor Van Oord Offshore Wind UK Ltd to design, test, make and supply about 360 km (224 miles) of 66 kV XLPE-insulated inter-array cables and related accessories to the GBP-3-billion (USD 4.1bn/EUR 3.6bn) project.
Hellenic Cables will produce the cables at its plant in Corinth, Greece, with production slated to begin sometime this year and finish in 2023.
RWE has contracted Van Oord to deliver the engineering, procurement, construction (EPC) and installation of the monopile foundations and the array cables at Sofia, which is currently under construction. Once operational, the wind farm is expected to power nearly 1.2 million UK homes.
The latest contract comes on the heels of orders already secured by Hellenic Cables, most recently in January, for array cable supply to the three phases of the 3.6-GW offshore wind complex Dogger Bank, which is also currently under construction offshore England.
