Hywind Scotland to use Proserv cable monitoring tech

Controls technology company Proserv said today it will provide its cable monitoring system, called ECG, to analyse the condition of export and inter-array cables at the 30-MW Hywind Scotland floating offshore wind farm of Norwegian energy group Equinor ASA (NYSE:EQNR).

Hywind Scotland, located off the coast of Peterhead, Aberdeenshire in Scotland, was commissioned in 2017, becoming the world’s first commercial floating offshore wind farm.

Proserv’s system will be installed in the third quarter of 2022 and a demonstration of its data analytics abilities will take place until April 2024.

Proserv has been supported in delivering the technology by its consortium partners -- power system monitoring outfit Synaptec and subsea power cable engineering firm BPP Cable Solutions, as well as by the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult.

“Owners and operators urgently need a cohesive O&M strategy around their cable assets and with its scrutiny of terminations, alongside its unique predictive insights, ECG offers unrivalled visibility of this key part of an offshore wind farm’s infrastructure,” said Paul Cook, Proserv business development director – renewables.

The technology achieved its first commercial sale earlier this year, securing a contract to be deployed at the bottom-fixed Dogger Bank Wind Farm phases A and B to monitor the inter-array cables.
