Transmission system operator (TSO) TenneT Holding BV on Tuesday said it has awarded the contract for the cable production and laying for the 980-MW BorWin6 grid connection in the German North Sea.
The contract was awarded as part of a tendering process to Nexans Norway AS, meaning that the key contracts for the construction of the link have now been allocated. The offshore and onshore converter stations were awarded in February.
BorWin6 will use 235 kilometres (145 miles) of extra-high voltage direct current cable, including 190 km of submarine cable and 45 km of land cable, to transmit the power to the converter station in Buettel, Schleswig-Holstein. The wind turbines will be hooked up directly to the BorWin kappa offshore platform via 66-kilovolt three-phase cables.
Work on laying the cables is expected to begin in 2025.
Scheduled for completion in 2027, BorWin6 will be the last offshore grid connection system to be implemented by TenneT in the German North Sea with 320-kV technology as future projects will shift to 525 kV and a transmission capacity of 2 GW.
