Rosatom's Renera to build battery gigafactory in Kaliningrad

Renera LLC, the energy storage business of Russian state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom, has taken a step towards building a “Russian gigafactory” in the country’s Kaliningrad Region.

Renera has entered into an agreement with the regional government to execute the project and launch the new facility at the Baltic NPP site in 2026. Enertech International Inc, the Korean maker of lithium-ion batteries in which Renera has a 49% ownership interest, will act as the technological partner of the project.

The plant will focus on the production of lithium-ion cells and energy storage systems and will have a total annual battery manufacturing capacity of at least 3 GWh.

“The signals we receive from the Russian market indicate that the production volumes we planned a year ago may be insufficient. To fulfill the current plans for electric transport development, we are considering a possible growth of the plant's production capacity up to 12 GWh,” said Emin Askerov, director general of Renera.

Natalia Nikipelova, president of TVEL Fuel Company, the nuclear fuel unit of Rosatom that holds Renera, in turn commented that the plant’s production is supposed to be consumed mainly by domestic car manufacturers.
