Renewables account for 44.4% of Germany's power generation in Q3

The share of electricity generated from renewable energy sources in Germany rose to 44.4% of the total power fed into the grid in the third quarter of 2022 from 43% a year earlier, driven by more wind and solar energy, shows data published by the Federal Statistics Office (Destatis).

Wind turbines produced 19.8 billion kWh of electricity in the three months through the end of September and accounted for 16.8% of the electricity fed into the power grid, up from 16.5% a year earlier. The feed-in from solar energy increased by 20.3% in annual terms to 18.9 billion kWh, reaching a share of 16.0% of the total power output. The strong increase was mainly a result of the unusually high number of hours of sunshine in the autumn of 2022.

The share of conventional power fell to 55.6% of the total 118.1 billion kWh from 57.0% a year ago. Power generation from coal and natural gas grew 13.3% and 4.5%, respectively, to 42.9 billion kWh and 10.9 billion kWh while nuclear power plants fed 8.7 billion kWh, corresponding to a share of 7.4%.
