Poland to co-finance renewable energy projects in rural areas

The Polish government announced today the launch of a PLN-1-billion (USD 231m/EUR 213m) programme to support investments in renewable energy sources and energy storage in rural areas.

The programme, called Energy for the Countryside and financed by the EU Modernisation Fund, was prepared by the environment and the agricultural ministry to increase the use of renewable energy sources in the areas and support Poland's energy independence, environmental minister Anna Moskwa said.

Farmers and energy cooperatives will be able to apply for co-financing of renewable energy installations from January 25, 2023. Support will come as a subsidy of a maximum of PLN 20 million or a loan of up to PLN 25 million.

Photovoltaic (PV) installations or wind turbines may be granted a loan of up to 100% of the costs, while biogas and hydropower projects may get a subsidy of up to 65% of the expenditure.

The programme is an opportunity for a significant energy transformation in the countryside, agriculture minister Henryk Kowalczyk noted, adding that it should be run in a sustainable manner, in harmony with agricultural and food production.
