Power utility group Enel Colombia said on Thursday it had launched construction of a 29.87-MW solar farm in Panama, one of its three markets in Central America.
The project is handled by the company's renewables business Enel Green Power, which manages its clean energy assets in Colombia, Guatemala, Panama and Costa Rica.
The new solar farm, named Baco, will be located in Chiriqui province on the west coast of Panama. Just next to the Baco site is Enel Green Power’s 31-MW Madre Vieja solar farm, currently under construction, Some three kilometres (1.86 miles) away, the renewables firm has Esperanza, Caldera and Sol de David solar plants in operation.
Between 2020 and 2023, Enel Green Power invested USD 74.5 million (EUR 68.6m) in solar projects in Panama, Baco included, Enel Colombia said.
The Baco plant will be equipped with over 50,400 solar panels installed over an area of 32 hectares. It will share a 34.5 kV connection line with the Madre Vieja solar farm.
Baco’s annual output is estimated at some 48 GWh. Enel Green Power expects to have the plant in operation at the end of 2023.
Enel Colombia and Enel Green Power are part of Italian utility Enel SpA (BIT:ENEL).
