Swedish private forest owner Svenska Cellulosa AB (STO:SCA A), or SCA, which leases out land for the construction and operation of wind parks, unveiled Wednesday the acquisition of its first wind farm, an 85-MW site located in northern Sweden.
The purchase comes shortly after SCA pledged to grow and realise business opportunities in the field of renewable energy and to establish a dedicated reporting segment for this sector.
The wind park, Skogberget Vind AB, was acquired from German wind turbine maker Enercon for about SEK 800 million (USD 76.9m/EUR 72.3m), a press release said.
The Skogberget wind farm has 36 turbines with annual electricity production of nearly 200 GWh. Some 15 of the turbines are situated over SCA land. The plant, which was commissioned in 2014, is located in the Markbygden area in the municipality of Piteå, northern Sweden.
"This is an important first step for SCA, and we’re now considering options to upgrade the wind farm over time, so that each turbine multiplies the amount of power produced on land that is already in use," SCA’s chief executive Ulf Larsson said.
Founded in 1929, SCA claims to be the largest private forest holding company in Europe, offering packaging paper, pulp, wood products, renewable energy, services for forest owners and transport solutions. The company’s land houses 20% of Sweden's installed wind power capacity.
