French renewable power producer Neoen SA (EPA:NEOEN) has started construction of its 40-MW/40-MWh Storen Power Reserve lithium-ion battery in Sweden.
The company said today it has provided notice to proceed to Japanese battery storage specialist Nidec Corp (TYO:6594). Neoen owns the project and will be its long-term operator.
Located in the municipality of Ragunda and due to come online in the first half of 2024, the battery will provide ancillary services to the Swedish grid.
Neoen, which established a presence in Stockholm in 2020, says it is developing numerous projects across Sweden. It already has a 57.4-MW wind farm under construction in the country and a 90-MWp solar project with construction planned for the second half of 2023.
Storen Power Reserve is Neoen’s second battery in the Nordics after the 30-MW/30-MWh Yllikkala Power Reserve in Finland which was commissioned in 2020. The French company has a total battery storage portfolio of more than 1,000 MW in operation or under construction. It is a leading battery owner in Australia, where it recently launched construction of two batteries of 200 MW/400MWh in South Australia and Queensland.
