Ørsted applies for permits to add 15 GW of offshore wind in Sweden

Denmark's Ørsted A/S (CPH:ORSTED) announced today it is seeking permission for four offshore wind projects in Swedish waters with a combined capacity of 15 GW, all with anticipated commissioning by 2032.

The additional proposals will expand the company’s offshore wind portfolio in the Nordic country to 18 GW. Once built, these wind farms will produce enough power to cover more than half of Sweden's total electricity consumption, Ørsted estimates.

Two of the new projects, dubbed Gavle East and Gavle West, envisage the deployment of up to 5.5 GW plus 4 GW of capacity outside Gavle, Avlkarleby, Tierp and Osthammar municipalities in the Gavleborg and Uppsala counties of southeastern Sweden.

Off Karlskrona municipality in Blekinge County, Ørsted will locate the 4-GW Baltic Central Offshore Wind Farm, while the 1.5-GW Kattegat plant will be built in waters off Halmstad and Falkenberg, Halland County.

The new proposals add to the list of Ørsted’s existing projects in Sweden -- Skane Havsvindpark and Gotland Offshore Wind Park, each with a planned capacity of 1.5 GW. After receiving environmental clearance for Skane Havsvindpark last month, the company expects to have all permits this year and bring the capacity online by 2029. Gotland Offshore Wind Park is planned to be switched on by 2032.

The offshore wind power projects are strategically placed to deliver electricity where it is needed most, and can contribute to reducing the need for expensive upgrades in the transmission network from northern Sweden to places where electricity is needed in the south, according to Jesper Kuhn Olesen, project director for Ørsted's offshore wind farms in Sweden.
