The North American subsidiary of Brazilian petrochemical company Braskem SA (BVMF:BRKM5) today summarised the signing of a few clean energy contracts on the path to achieving 15%-plus reduction in carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions by 2030.
Philadelphia-based polypropylene producer Braskem America said it has sealed a renewable power purchase agreement (PPA) for Neal, West Virginia, along with emissions-free power contracts for Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania through 2027, while also agreeing to purchase Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) in the USGC.
The firm noted that these initial agreements, as it described them, are the first phase in its carbon reduction goals. They source electricity from wind, solar and nuclear energy plants.
“Our initial North American renewable, as well as emissions-free power purchase agreements, are aligned with Braskem's macro goals of reducing CO2 scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions and expanding the circular economy concept in the plastic chain with the end goal of becoming a carbon-neutral company by 2050,” stated Mark Nikolich, CEO of Braskem America. He added that the firm plans to further scale its renewable and emissions-free power purchases in North America.
Braskem America has five production plants in the states of Texas, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, as well as an innovation and technology centre in Pittsburgh.
