Vantage Towers to use micro wind turbines to power own towers

Germany-based Vantage Towers AG (ETR:VTWR) is planning to install micro wind turbines of Berlin-based wind energy startup MOWEA GmbH on some of its telecommunication towers across the country and use the generated green electricity to power the towers.

The first phase of the partnership includes the deployment of 752 micro turbines on 52 towers, Vantage Towers said on Wednesday. The turbines will generate up to 650 MWh of green electricity which will be enough to fully supply the towers and avoid 239 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

The installation of the turbines is expected to start in the second half of this year if all permits are available until then.

Created as a spin-off from the Technical University of Berlin, MOWEA manufactures wind energy systems that can be flexibly customised and integrated into existing infrastructure for real estate or industry applications. The turbines do not depend on conventional energy to operate and can be deployed in remote areas.

"We have more than 82,000 towers in Europe. So, if the pilot project is a success, there is clear potential for the future expansion of the partnership,” said Vantage Towers' chief executive Vivek Badrinath.

Duesseldorf-based Vantage Towers is a subsidiary of Vodafone Group Plc (LON:VOD) that went public last spring. The company has a portfolio of towers, masts, rooftop sites, distributed antenna systems (DAS) and small cells in ten countries across Europe.
