Denmark's Eurowind Energy throws biogas into the mix

Danish renewables developer Eurowind Energy A/S has set up a new competence centre for biogas to complement the existing ones for solar photovoltaic (PV), wind energy and Power-to-X (PtX).

The company said on Monday that it is entering the biogas market as part of a plan to create large energy centres with a variety of complementary technologies supporting different needs. When it comes to biogas, Eurowind Energy is of the opinion that it should be used as an alternative and necessary fuel for certain industries and not for heating domestic houses or power generation.

At present, the company is developing eight biogas projects in Denmark and expects to begin construction on the first one in 2023/24. Its plants will prioritise the use of straw and other biomaterial and will be produced without excessive use of accelerators even though, it says, this could more than double the length of the gasification process.

Apart from biogas, the output of the facilities will include oxygen, carbon dioxide (CO2), and fertiliser, with the gases having the potential to be processed further in combination with hydrogen, to produce e-fuels and methanol, among other derivatives. The company noted that the final products will depend on the local off-taker.

“We see biogas as an important building block for our energy centres. We already have the power from our solar and wind parks. It makes sense to combine and let these elements work together in a closed system. That way we can reduce the strain on the infrastructure of both electricity and gas,” said Søren Rasmussen, Eurowind Energy co-founder and deputy chairman of the company’s board.

Eventually, Eurowind Energy wants to pursue biogas projects outside of its home country as well.
