RWE forms floating wind partnership in Spain with Ferrovial

German energy major RWE AG (ETR:RWE) has joined forces with sustainable infrastructure and mobility operator Ferrovial SA (BME:FER) to analyse the joint development, construction and operation of floating wind projects off the coast of Spain.

The two companies announced today they have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish the terms of a final deal.

Spain has set a target of 3 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030, specifically relying on floating platforms because of the considerable water depths off its coast. RWE described Spain as “a highly attractive market with significant development opportunities for offshore wind” and noted that the National Marine Spatial Plan indicates over 20 GW of potential capacity.

Engaged in the entire offshore wind value chain, the German company currently operates 18 wind farms in five countries and plans to boost its net offshore wind capacity from 3 GW to 8 GW by 2030. When it comes to floating wind, RWE has plans for the US, France, Norway and the APAC region, while in Spain in particular, it is testing the DemoSATH floating unit alongside Saitec Offshore Technologies. Ferrovial was involved in the demo project too as it was in charge of fabricating the concrete platform.

The Spanish company, on the other hand, is experienced in the construction of transmission lines and solar photovoltaic (PV) plants, among other projects. To date, it has submitted expressions of interest for four Spanish wind farms off the coast of Lugo, Pontevedra, Gerona and Gran Canaria, with an installed capacity of 1,750 MW.
