Naturgy, Enagas Renovable plan up to 280-MW green H2 plant in Spain

Spanish power and gas utility Naturgy Energy Group SA (BME:NTGY) on Tuesday unveiled plans to install up to 280 MW of green hydrogen production capacity in La Robla, northern Spain, alongside its partner Enagas Renovable.

Naturgy and Enagas Renovable, the renewable gases unit of Spanish gas grid operator Enagas SA (BME:ENG), formed the Robla Hub joint venture to carry out the project.

The investment in the initiative is estimated at around EUR 485 million (USD 519.5m). The partners plan to use the site of Naturgy’s old La Robla thermal power plant, which is now being dismantled, as the location for the electrolysers. These will be powered by several solar PV plants totalling some 450 MWp that will be commissioned in the near-by municipalities, Naturgy said.

In an initial phase, the electrolysis plant will have 60 MW. The hope is that the presence of industrial hydrogen consumers in the area and the site’s proximity to the future hydrogen pipeline will lead to the expansion of the electrolysis capacity to 280 MW.

There are also possibilities to support local hydrogen mobility efforts, according to the utility.
