New York targets 2 GW in third offshore wind procurement

New York Governor Kathy Hochul on Wednesday released the state’s third offshore wind solicitation, targeting at least 2 GW of capacity in line with its goal to have 9 GW of offshore wind turbines by 2035.

The solicitation follows an earlier Request for Information and will incorporate the first phase of New York’s USD-500-million (EUR 488.5m) investment programme for ports, manufacturing, and supply chain infrastructure. With the new tender round, the state will also introduce a “meshed ready” offshore transmission configuration that will facilitate the transitioning of offshore wind projects to a future renewable energy system.

The competition is administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), which will await proposals by December 22, 2022. The awarded projects will add capacity that will generate electricity for at least 1.5 million homes in New York.

According to the announcement, the solicitation is tied to commitments to promote local manufacturing and domestic steel production.

New York aims to source 70% of its total power from renewables by 2030 and have a zero-emission electricity sector by 2040. At present, plans for five offshore wind farms are in “active development” so as to add more than 4.3 GW of capacity.
