Swedish state-owned utility Vattenfall AB has lodged planning applications for the construction of a 90-MW wind farm with up to 50 MW of battery energy storage capacity in South West Scotland.
The proposals have been filed for review with the Scottish Government’s Energy Consents Unit and will undergo public consultation by the end of March, Vattenfall said on Monday.
The Quantans Hill wind farm is planned to be located near Carsphairn, in the Dumfries and Galloway council area, consisting of 14 turbines. The Swedish firm expects the plant to have an annual power output that will be enough to supply 80,000 homes. Its integrated battery storage facility is expected to help improve grid resilience and the security of power supply.
If it secures the green light, Vattenfall could begin construction as early as 2025 and potentially start power generation from 2027.
Quantans Hill will be located in proximity to Vattenfall’s 240-MW South Kyle wind park in East Ayrshire, which is expected to go live this year. Initially, the new project envisaged the installation of 21 turbines but their number was subsequently reduced to take into account results from environmental studies.
The scheme will come with a community benefit fund of up to GBP 16 million (USD 19.2m/EUR 18m).
