Vestas completes nacelle for 15-MW turbine prototype

Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS) has completed the nacelle for its V236-15.0 MW prototype at its factory in Lindo, port of Odense, in Denmark, the company said on Tuesday.

The prototype nacelle is now ready for testing, which will involve physical rotation of the turbine drive train. After the test programme, the nacelle will be shipped to the Osterild test site for installation.

Vestas presented its 15-MW offshore wind turbine model to the market in February 2021. The installation of the prototype is due to start in the second half of 2022, with serial production slated for 2024. The prototype will be the world’s most powerful wind turbine when installed.

The V236-15.0 MW turbine will be able to generate up to 80 GWh per year, which is enough energy to power more than 20,000 households, the manufacturer estimates.

The prototype nacelle is the first to employ Vestas’ modular nacelle design, which has also been applied to Vestas’ latest EnVentus onshore turbines -- the V162-7.2 MW and V172-7.2 MW, the company said.
