SolarEdge opens 2-GWh battery cell factory in S Korea

Israel-based inverter supplier SolarEdge Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:SEDG) has launched initial operations at a 2-GWh factory for battery cells in South Korea, expecting to ramp up production in the second half of this year.

The Sella 2 facility, located in the Eumseong Innovation City of North Chungcheong Province, is planned to produce battery cells for SolarEdge’s residential solar-attached batteries and for various industries, including mobile applications, energy stationary storage solutions (ESS) and UPS applications, the Israeli firm said on Thursday.

SolarEdge and its subsidiary Kokam are currently making test cells for certification at the new site. Once production ramps up, the manufacturing plant will provide the group with its own supply of lithium-ion batteries and will enable it to develop new battery cell technologies. In the future, SolarEdge expects to scale up the project so as to meet its own needs for storage solutions.
