Wind turbine maker Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy SA (BME:SGRE) and South Korean power plant equipment manufacturer Doosan Enerbility Co Ltd (KRX:034020) on Tuesday said that they have signed a binding framework agreement to work together on activities in South Korea’s offshore wind power market.
The latest agreement builds up on their memorandum of understanding signed in June last year, in which the duo committed to explore possible joint actions in the South Korean offshore wind sector.
In the next phase, Siemens Gamesa and Doosan will exchange knowledge on wind turbine technology and cooperate on installation and post-installation activities and training.
The Korean partner will assemble Siemens Gamesa’s offshore wind turbine nacelles at a Doosan facility that it currently in the design phase. It will also perform turbine assembly for Siemens Gamesa turbines at harbours, provide offshore construction services of projects using Siemens Gamesa machines and offshore service on select orders.
The scope of the partnership will depend on Siemens Gamesa securing offshore wind power orders in the South Korean market, according to the announcement.
“We are eager to bring our market-leading offshore skills including our unique offshore Direct Drive nacelle technology to South Korea. We will also greatly benefit from Doosan’s deep understanding of the Korean market to accelerate the country’s energy transition,” commented Marc Becker, CEO of Siemens Gamesa’s offshore business.
Added Hongook Park, CEO of Doosan Enerbility’s Power Services Business Group: “Both of us being companies with our own offshore wind turbine models and solid track record, we aim to cooperate on broadening our participation in the Korean offshore wind power market and actively pursue promotion of the domestic offshore wind power ecosystem”.
