Denmark’s Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS) today said it has been selected as the preferred turbine supplier for the 1.3-GW MunmuBaram floating wind project off the southeastern coast of South Korea.
Shell Overseas Investments BV and Swedish floating wind specialist Hexicon AB (STO:HEXI), the partnership behind the project, has chosen the V236-15.0 MW machines to power the future wind farm. Provided that a firm order is placed, Vestas will supply and install 84 units of the 15-MW turbines, which will be mounted on floating foundations in water depths of between 120 metres (394 feet) and 150 metres.
The wind turbine manufacturer will also be tasked with servicing and maintaining the hardware for 20 years.
MunmuBaram is planned to be located off the coast of Ulsan in an area of roughly 240 square kilometres. In March, the project was granted exclusive development rights for its full planned capacity after the award of two additional electricity business licences by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
The MunmuBaram joint venture is controlled by Shell Overseas Investments, a unit of British oil giant Shell Plc (LON:SHEL). In August, Hexicon increased its direct shareholding in the scheme to 20%.
A finalised deal for Vestas will be the manufacturer’s first announced contract for a large-scale project utilising the V236-15.0 MW machines on floating foundations, the Danish firm noted.
