Korean renewables developer Elenergy Co Ltd has engaged Norwegian assurance provider DNV as owner’s engineer for its 1.5-GW Chujin offshore wind project in South Korea.
DNV said on Wednesday its responsibilities will include driving the pre-front end engineering design (FEED) and supervising contractors in the final design, procurement, construction, commissioning and operations phases.
Located 10 km (6.2 miles) east of Chuja-do in Jeju City, Jeonam province, the fixed-bottom project will become South Korea’s largest offshore wind farm when completed in 2027. It will be built in three phases, with an initial deployment of 500 MW and a further 1 GW in the subsequent two phases. The project is backed by South Korea-based shipping carrier Namsung Shipping.
“Most offshore markets in Asia Pacific are only just starting to develop. Navigating and managing technical risks and local market regulations are crucial," Elenergy executive director Jun Seok Lee said, commenting on the selection of DNV.
According to DNV, offshore wind offers a significant potential to contribute to South Korea’s energy mix, given the country’s high offshore wind speeds and low level of renewable energy penetration.
Last month, it was announced that Elenergy has selected Jacobs (NYSE:J) to carry out a feasibility study for a green hydrogen production and import facility in South Korea.
