Plan to extend Finland's 1st offshore wind farm advances in permitting

Finnish wind power producer Suomen Hyotytuuli Oy on Thursday said its offshore wind farm extension project near Pori on the west coast of Finland is moving ahead to the permitting stage.

The company proposes to extend its existing 42-MW Tahkoluoto nearshore wind farm that became fully operational in 2017. It is Finland's first offshore wind farm.

The new project could see the installation of 40 turbines of more than 15 MW, or an overall capacity of about 600 MW, northeast of the current wind farm. The extension is expected to be completed in 2027 and to produce 2,000 GWh a year.

The land use plan for the project was recently approved and it will now proceed to water and building permitting, technical design and investment decision, according to the announcement. The environmental impact assessment was carried out in 2020 and 2021.

In July 2022, the Finnish government approved the lease of state-owned sea areas for this project and another large offshore wind project off the coast of Korsnas, Ostrobothnia region developed by Metsahallitus, the Finnish Forest Administration.
