Sun Cable forms research tie-up to drive Asian green grid plan

Solar energy infrastructure developer Sun Cable has set up a partnership with scientific research organisations to advance innovation in support of green grid development across Asia.

The company said on Wednesday it has tied up with nine universities and scientific institutions from Australia and Singapore to jointly engage in research initiatives for supporting cross-border renewable power trade.

The Asia Green Grid Network (AGGN) group, which is open for participation by corporate and academic institutions, will review plans for carbon-free electricity grids that transmit power from renewable energy facilities and thus provide a solution to power intermittency. The network will seek to enhance technological innovation and policy changes within Asia and boost collaboration in the energy field.

AGGN released findings from research commissioned by Sun Cable showing that by achieving 15% grid interconnection by 2040, around 3,335 TWh of renewable electricity will be traded in Asia-Pacific annually.

Sun Cable is the proponent of the AUD-30-billion (USD 19.4bn/EUR 19.4bn) Australia-Asia PowerLink (AAPowerLink) project, the goal of which is to import electricity into Singapore from an up to 20-GWp solar park in Australia. The complex, to be paired with up to 42 GWh of energy storage, will export its output through a subsea link.
