Qair to embark on waste-to-energy project near London

French renewable energy producer Qair Group has acquired the right to a waste-to energy project near London as part of the acquisition of UK waste management company Britaniacrest Recycling Ltd.

The purchase of Britaniacrest Recycling was finalised last week, Qair said without disclosing the value of the investment.

In addition to waste management infrastructure assets, the acquired entity holds the rights to the 3Rs Energy from Waste (EfW) project, planned to be located at the company’s Wealden Works site near Horsham, some 35 miles away from central London. Qair intends to move the project forward, providing electricity from up to 23 MW of baseload sustainable power generation.

The French firm expects to reach financial close on the scheme next year and bring the facility online in 2026. Discussions are already ongoing with a major engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor, it said.

Britaniacrest was established in 1993 and is currently one of the largest private waste management companies in the South of England. Qair’s plan for the business is to expand its activities by creating an outlet for non-recyclable residual waste fractions.

In the UK, Qair is working on a 700-MW portfolio of wind and solar projects. The company, along with partners, was awarded the rights to develop 2 GW of offshore wind projects in the country.
