US DoE to provide USD 10m for marine energy innovation projects

The US Department of Energy (DoE) last week said it intends to release a USD-10-million (EUR 9.8m) funding opportunity to foster wave-powered technology innovation.

The funding opportunity, called Marine Energy Systems Innovation at Sea, is expected to be issued in September through the department’s Water Power Technologies Office (WPTO).

It will support wave-powered systems innovation for desalinated water production, research and development (R&D) activities for powering the blue economy markets, as well as a feasibility assessment for an ocean current test facility. The latter will seek to back projects suggesting locations, designs and estimated costs for a test facility off the eastern US coast.

The funding will aim to aid long-duration, at-sea testing along with component-level R&D that can help, for instance, integrate wave energy with desalination systems and advance anchoring and mooring technologies.
