Irish ocean energy developer Simply Blue Group and two Spanish firms, Proes Consultores and FF New Energy Ventures, said on Monday that they have formed a joint venture (JV) to develop around 2 GW of floating wind projects off the coasts of Spain and Portugal.
The launch of the IberBlue Wind JV follows the memorandum of understanding that the three signed in April this year to explore floating wind opportunities in the Iberian waters.
The new company said that the trio’s combined experience in the renewables space will enable the group to tackle all phases of floating wind farm development as it pursues projects of 500 MW or more.
Simply Blue Group has floating wind projects in the plans in the waters of Ireland, UK, US, Poland, and Sweden, and the new alliance will pave the way for its entry into the Spanish and Portuguese markets.
Proes Consultores, the specialised engineering and architecture division of Spain’s multi-disciplinary technology group Amper SA (BME:AMP), has a background in the marine and coastal engineering sectors and worked on the design of the Kincardine floating wind farm in Scotland.
Madrid-based FF New Energy Ventures is said to be developing 2 GW of solar PV, wind and battery storage projects in Spain and Portugal.
As a JV, the partners will initially focus on development in the regions of Andalusia, southern Spain, and Galicia in the north. In Portugal, they selected the central and northern parts of the country where there is an excellent wind energy resource, IberBlue Wind said.
