Energinet, Ørsted and more partner on energy island innovation on Bornholm

A number of private, state and municipal organisations have formed a partnership, called Baltic Energy Island, on Bornholm that is aimed at creating a global hub for green energy innovation, testing and business development, it was announced on Monday.

The coalition includes Danish energy group and leading offshore wind developer Ørsted A/S (CPH:ORSTED), wind turbine manufacturer Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy SA (BME:SGRE), the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Danish electricity and gas grid operator Energinet, Bornholm Regional Municipality, electricity supplier Bornholms Energi & Forsyning and the Port of Ronne.

On Monday, it was also announced that the planned energy island on Bornholm will be expanded to 3 GW of offshore wind capacity and will be connected to Germany, contributing to the security of supply and the green energy transition. When established in 2030, it will be the world's first energy island of scale and can create grounds for the future development of energy islands globally, according to the announcement.

The partnership will focus on areas such as the development of the Baltic Sea as a centre for offshore wind and a green transport hub, the development of technologies for energy islands and Power-to-X, education and training.

News on the Bornholm energy island came as Denmark is hosting the Baltic Sea Energy Security Summit today.
