Finland adds over 2.4 GW of wind capacity in 2022

Finland has greatly expanded its wind power capacity in 2022 by adding 2,430 MW of turbines and reaching 5,677 MW of cumulative wind installations, the Finnish Wind Energy Association (FWPA) said on Tuesday.

The number of turbines increased by 437 to 1,393. As most of the turbines built in 2022 started generating electricity at the end of the year, they are yet to make an impact on generation data, the association noted.

The wind projects completed in 2022 also brought over EUR 2.9 billion (USD 3.1bn) of investment to Finland.

“No other industry currently brings as many annual investment euros to Finland as wind power,” said FWPA chief executive Anni Mikkonen. She further commented that wind power is also increasing Finland's energy self-sufficiency at “a really good pace.”

A share of 47% of the country’s wind capacity is in the hands of domestic owners.

FWPA expects that after the record 2022 year, wind additions will level off in the next years. More specifically, the annual deployments are seen at around 1,000 MW for 2023, over 1,200 MW for 2024, and around 1,000 MW for 2025. These figures are based on published investment decisions and could increase, especially for 2024 and 2025.

Wind power is projected to meet at least 28% of Finland’s electricity usage in 2025.
