PGE seeking suppliers for 269 MW battery in Poland

Polska Grupa Energetyczna (WSE:PGE) said today it is preparing to launch a tender for the supply of a 205 MW-269 MW energy storage facility after its previous procurement procedure at the end of 2022 failed due to lack of interest.

PGE has invited interested contractors to preliminary market consultations, the purpose of which is to prepare the optimal conditions for launching the competitive bidding process.

The project will be located in the vicinity of Zarnowiec, the biggest pumped-storage power plant in the country. The battery will have a capacity of some 1,000 MWh, which will make it the largest energy storage system in Europe, according to PGE.

The installation will allow the grid transmission operator to balance demand with supply from the fluctuating generation of onshore wind farms and the future PGE offshore facilities in the Baltic Sea, planned to be connected to the neighbouring 400-kV Choczewo grid node, the company added.

PGE Group recognises energy storage as a future source of stable revenues and one of the key solutions in the energy transformation process, the company noted. The dynamic integration of renewables in the country's energy mix calls for stable balancing services for the Polish power system.
