The European Commission (EC) on Friday officially launched the block’s Solar Photovoltaic Industry Alliance, seeking to scale up domestic photovoltaic (PV) manufacturing and lower supply risks by commercialising “Made in Europe” products.
The European Solar PV Industry Alliance will aim to facilitate investments that will promote a goal for 30 GW of European production capacity by 2025, across the whole value chain. According to the EC’s estimates, some EUR 60 billion (USD 63bn) of new GDP per year will be brought into Europe if the target is achieved.
The new body will group various solar sector stakeholders such as industry representatives and research institutes to identify manufacturing scale-up bottlenecks and will provide an action plan for the solar industry value chain in Europe. It will work with the EU and member states on a wide range of areas, including research and innovation, raw materials, access to finance, off-takers and international partnerships.
The initiative is included in the EU Solar Energy Strategy, which is part of the REPowerEU Plan and calls for over 320 GW of newly installed PV capacity in the EU by 2025 and almost 600 GW by 2030.
The alliance, the creation of which was approved in October, will be open to all businesses, public and private entities involved in the PV manufacturing industry in the EU. A membership application form is already available on the EC’s website.
