India to open bidding for green hydrogen projects by May - report

The Indian government is expected by May to launch a tender that will allocate incentives for the construction of green hydrogen production facilities and electrolyser factories, unnamed sources have told Reuters.

The plan calls for the installation of two hubs to produce green hydrogen for use in the fertiliser and steelmaking industries and in transportation, by blending it with natural gas. The construction of two fertiliser plants using green hydrogen and ammonia will also be pursued. Additionally, subsidies are to be allocated for the establishment of manufacturing sites for electrolysers.

According to government sources reached by Reuters, contracts to winners will be awarded within a year. Developers will be required to launch manufacturing in two years.

The bidding will be carried out as part of India’s recently adopted National Green Hydrogen Mission with a total budget of INR 197.44 billion (USD 2.39bn/EUR 2.24bn). One of the programme’s major goals is to support the development of at least 5 million tonnes of annual green hydrogen production capacity with some 125 GW of renewable energy additions by 2030.
