Neoen kicks off construction of 412-MW wind farm in S Australia

France’s Neoen SA (EPA:NEOEN) on Friday officially launched the construction of its 412-MW Goyder South Stage 1 wind farm, set to become the largest one of its kind in South Australia.

The wind park will be built as the initial phase of the AUD-3-billion (USD 2.06bn/EUR 2.07bn) Goyder Renewables Zone project. The massive development envisages the phased installation of up to 1,200 MW of wind, 600 MW of solar and 900 MW/1,800 MWh of energy storage capacity in South Australia's Mid North region, around 100 kilometres north-east of Adelaide.

The Goyder South Stage 1 wind farm is scheduled to go online in 2024. To be equipped with 75 GE 5.5-158 Cypress platform turbines, it already has a 100-MW power purchase agreement (PPA) in place with the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Earlier in August, Aussie electricity retailer Flow Power clinched a deal to procure electricity from a 40-MW portion of the capacity.

Neoen expects the construction phase to create more than 400 jobs. Once in operation, Goyder South Stage 1 will outstrip South Australia’s 270-MW Snowtown Stage 2 wind farm, currently the largest one in the state. Early construction works at the site were initiated in January.
