Italy adds 2.48 GW of solar in 2022 to break through 25 GW

Italy installed 2.48 GW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity in 2022, reaching cumulative solar installation of just above 25 GW at the end of the year, trade body Italia Solare said on Friday after an analysis of data from grid operator Terna.

Residential systems accounted for 1.1 GW of the 2022 additions, reflecting the effect of the Superbonus support scheme for home upgrades. The commercial and industrial sector saw 678 MW of installations, and the utility-scale sector -- 571 MW.

The total new solar installations last year represent an increase of 164% compared to 2021, but are still far below 2030 objectives, the association said.

It added that the data shows the current measures are not sufficient and called for the introduction of urgent interventions such as measures to allow simplifications, especially for large-scale plants, and support for businesses for easier access to bank financing.
